  • What are phase change materials?

    Phase Change Materials, referred to as PCMs, are materials that absorb enormous amounts of thermal energy (heat). As they absorb or release thermal energy, they change phase. In the case of BioPCM, as it absorbs heat the material transitions from a solid to a gel (or solid to solid), and gel to solid (or solid to solid) as it releases heat.

  • What is latent heat?

    Latent heat is thermal energy which is absorbed or released when a material changes phases.

  • What is BioPCM made from?

    BioPCM is made from sustainably-sourced, renewable, plant-based by-products.

  • What is Thermal Mass?

    Thermal mass is the ability of a material to absorb and store thermal energy (heat). High-density materials, like concrete, brick or tile, have a high thermal mass and require a great amount of heat to change temperatures. Light weight material, such as timber, has a lower thermal mass. At the target temperature, the BioPCM within a one inch thick ENRG Blanket will store as much heat as an 24 inch thick block of concrete of equal footprint.

  • Is BioPCM Thermal Mass?

    BioPCM is “smart” thermal mass. It is capable of absorbing thermal energy at a specific design temperature and releasing it at the same temperature range. This allows it to buffer or control internal building temperatures intelligently. Because the transition temperature of BioPCM can be controlled, it impacts the energy consumption of an HVAC system by reducing cycling and system run times, thus saving energy.

  • What is the Q value?

    “Q” value is the transition temperature of the material stated in Celsius. For example, Q23 has a transition temperature of 23ºC.

  • What is the “M” value?

    “M” value is the thermal storage capacity of the material. It is based on BTU/sq.ft. For example, M27 = 27BTU/sq.ft. of material and M51 = 51BTU/sq.ft. of material.

  • How does ENRG Blanket save energy and money?

    ENRG Blanket, when properly applied, will absorb and release heat from a conditioned space. This process reduces the cycles and overall run time of the HVAC system, reducing HVAC energy consumption. Savings typically range between 25 – 35% of HVAC energy.

  • Does ENRG Blanket replace insulation?

    ENRG Blanket is not insulation. Instead, it works in concert with insulation. Insulation is a passive barrier to heat or cold entering a space. ENRG Blanket is an active building component which absorbs and releases thermal energy to buffer internal temperature swings, making the space more comfortable.

  • Does ENRG Blanket work in a multi-story building?

  • What impact does ENRG Blanket have on heated spaces?

    ENRG Blanket provides significant energy savings for spaces that are in a heating-dominated climate. ENRG Blanket captures and stores heat during the day and releases that heat when the temperature of the space drops below the transition set point of the phase change material.

  • How long does BioPCM last?

    BioPCM has undergone accelerated life-cycle tests, resulting in 100+ years with little to no degradation in performance.

  • Is BioPCM corrosive?

    BioPCM is a bio-based PCM and non-corrosive. Care should be used in selecting PCMs for building applications as salt-based PCM materials may present a corrosion hazard.

  • In a drop ceiling, do I install ENRG Blanket above or below the insulation?

    In a ducted return with insulation on top of the ceiling tile, ENRG Blanket should be installed between the insulation and the ceiling tile to interact with the occupied space.   • Will BioPCM attract rodents?

    BioPCM has been tested for rodent attraction. As a result, we found rodents are not attracted to the material as a food source. If needed, Phase Change Energy Solutions can provide a copy of our testing. Please call our sales department at 800-283-7887 to discuss.

  • How does ENRG Blanket react to fire?

    ENRG Blanket is produced in 3 fire class ratings to meet your local building codes. Class A, Class C, and Plenum ratings. Care should be used in selecting PCMs for building applications as other PCM materials are paraffin based and have a higher risk of flammability.

  • Is BioPCM toxic?

    BioPCM is not toxic. The material consists of plant-based, food-grade components.

  • How do I determine how much ENRG Blanket I need and the best way to install it?

  • Do I have to cover the entire ceiling space in a drop ceiling installation?

    Most drop ceiling applications require between 65 and 85% coverage. Optimizing the amount of the material requires analysis of the building, weather data and operational characteristics of the HVAC system. We can review your building/space requirements and make a recommendation based on your specific needs.

  • Is there a difference in energy savings between a plenum and ducted return?

    Based on multiple building tests, there is no difference in performance between ducted and plenum return systems.

  • How do I install ENRG Blanket?

    ENRG Blanket can be installed in a variety of locations in a building. Most are simple and do not require a professional installer. However, if needed, Phase Change Energy Solutions has a network of professional installers to support your installation requirements.

  • What about servicing lights and other fixtures above the drop ceiling after installation?

    Since ENRG Blanket simply lays on your drop ceiling tiles, you only need to move it to the side to perform service or maintenance on fixtures and equipment above the ceiling. Once the service is complete, you carefully reposition the ENRG Blanket where it was prior to service. Caution should be used when handling the ENRG Blanket to make sure it is not punctured or damaged.

  • How long does it take to install?

    In a typical drop ceiling retrofit, ENRG Blanket can be installed at a rate of 1,000 sq.ft./hr. by a four person crew with two ladders. Installation in new construction varies with the design of the walls and ceilings.

  • Is BioPCM and ENRG Blanket recyclable?

    BioPCM is 100% recyclable.

  • Is BioPCM and ENRG Blanket biodegradable?

    BioPCM is 100% biodegradable.

  • What happens if I puncture the ENRG Blanket?

    While the material is non-toxic, it can leak in the gelled state if the ENRG Blanket is punctured. Care should be taken to handle the material properly and avoid puncture or other damage.
